After sheetrock panels are hung, all seams, screw holes, and corners must be taped and mudded (covered with joint compound) to create smooth, seamless surfaces. This multi-coat process requires skill, patience, and the right materials. Done correctly, it's invisible. Done poorly, every seam shows through paint.
Paper tape or fiberglass mesh tape is embedded in joint compound at all seams. Corner bead is applied and set at all corners. Screw holes are filled. This first coat creates the structural bond.
A wider application of compound feathers out seams and covers tape. This coat begins the smoothing process, widening the feathered edge to blend with surrounding drywall.
Thin, skim-coat application brings seams to their final smooth state. Sanding between coats and after the final coat produces paint-ready surfaces.
